If there was ever a perfect use for mobile devices, it is reporting weather conditions. What temperature is it? Is it hotter than usual? Will it rain on my trip next week? Should I be worried about thunder storms? Simple questions we encounter every day from friends, strangers and even ourselves. It should be easy and quick to get the answers.
I was not satisfied with the handful of big name weather applications available for Android. In these I found videos and audio, machine generated twitter feeds and cat pictures. I found raw numbers with little thought and a user experience suffering because of it. I found it easy to get the predicted temperature for 10am a week from Sunday (accurate? not really), but difficult to compare conditions between home and work.
I created a Mobile Weather Application to help me follow the climate at the locations I care about. Start with a list of places and cover their conditions, temperature and local time. Easily add any city in the world and any person from my contact list. In the details I don’t just want raw numbers. At the top I need to know if it is calm or windy, dry or muggy, the temperature higher or lower than average. I also want a day by day forecast for 10 days out. I want my own data to judge global warming.
Think of Weather Tunnel as your personal weather report. It focuses on weather for the places you care about. Add locations by typing in the city name or using an address from contacts. See details and day to day forecasts with a swipe. The travel conditions are not just the local weather and forecast, but the local time for all the places you are going. The sunset, sunrise and moon phase are all there. Change your preferences if you prefer Celsius temperatures, Metric distance measures, 24 hour clocks and other ways of looking at the numbers. Not all the features I want are there yet, but it is a good start.
The Weather Tunnel uses data from the Weather Underground. I have found the Weather Underground data to be excellent, and the breath of their collection methods is unrivaled. You can follow a personal weather station that feeds into the Weather Underground database. In Search, just type in the station code with a prefix of "pws:", e.g. pws:KCASANFR53.
